impromime

This Impro-Mime session delved into mime’s ancient origins through the myth of Ariadne and Dionysus, accompanied by Kanaki Sada’s shakuhachi. After a warm-up focused on waiting and encounter, the performers moved through Ariadne’s labyrinth in solos, then created trios inspired by ancient depictions of the mythological couple. Another improvisation turned the mimes into spectators of an invisible show, with their reactions helping the actual audience imagine it. The final part drew on Xenophon’s Symposium and its description of a mimed performance of Ariadne and Dionysus. Mime history, iconography, ancient text, music and improvisation were thus brought together in a single session.
